What is existentialism? The word makes appearances in pop culture from time time, two examples that come to mind are Wes Anderson’s screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Fantastic Mr.Fox and David O. Russell’s I Heart Huckabees. In varying degrees both make reference to existentialism. Many people have a vague general idea of what existentialism is but when asked to give a clear and concise explanation or definition of what the word actually means they’re at a loss.
Existentialism is a branch of philosophy that deals with human existence or the human condition,what it means to be human. It asks what the meaning or purpose of life is, if any. Jean-Paul Sartre wrote that “what existentialist have in common is that they think that existence precedes essence, or, if you prefer, that subjectivity is the starting point.”
He used the example of artisan who wishes to fashion a paper cutter. She first pictures the paper cutter in her mind and then fashions it to perform a specific task. The essence, or the idea, of the paper cutter existed before the actual paper cutter. It was brought into existence first in the mind of it’s creator in order to fulfill a need. Existentialists believe the human first exists and then defines itself. “First of all man turns up, appears on the scene, and only afterwards, defines himself. If a man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will he be something, and he himself will have made what he will be. He is only what he wills himself to be after he is thrust into existence.”
I’ve been asked by several people recently about the difference between existentialism and nihilism. Nihilism is the belief that there isn’t any point to life and so anything a person does, or doesn’t do, is of no consequence. Existentialism states the opposite, that the human defines who and what it is, therefore the choices we make, collectively and as individuals, define our reality and are extremely important.
Existentialist philosophers speak of human anguish which Sartre defines as “the man who involves himself and who realizes that he is not only the person he chooses to be but also a law maker, who is, at the same time choosing all of humankind as well as himself, cannot escape the deep feeling of responsibility.” He said the existentialist must ask themselves , “What if everyone acted in this way” or “what would happen if everyone looked at a thing in that way.”
Sartre wrote that man is condemned to be free “condemned because he did not create himself , yet, in other respects is free; because once thrown into the world he is responsible for everything he does. Man is the future of man. There is nothing else than his life. There can be no other truth to start from than this. I think therefore I exist. It is the only theory that gives man dignity, the only one that does not reduce him to an object.”
The implications of existentialism are striking both on a personal and societal level. We, as individuals, a society and a species, have the ability to define what we are and what we will become. The starting point is simply the realization of our freedom, consciousness becoming aware of itself, a deep realization that one doesn’t have to accept the reality of another and all that surrounds a person is but a construct of a collective take on reality. “I build the universal in choosing myself; I build it in understanding the configuration of every other man, whatever age he might have lived in. This absoluteness of choice does not do away with the relativeness of each epoch. What existentialism shows is the connection between absolute character of free involvement and the relativeness of the cultural ensemble which may result from such a choice.”
My major problem with dogmatic religions isn’t that many religionist are closed minded, believe in nonsensical, non corroborating stories constructed by people who had a much more vague understanding of the world than we or accost me on the street to spread the good news. The gripe lies in the fact that when one makes a normative claim on the truth and gives that normative claim the seal of approval from the creator of the universe it justifies their take on reality above that of another, negating the freedom of anyone that doesn’t share in the “truth” from constructing their own set of values. Divine approval of values allows judgement to be passed on the values and reality of others but insulates the holder of divine beliefs from criticism.
A striking example of the danger of normative claims on truth is the suppression and destruction of the works of the Ionian philosopher scientists, from Thales to Democritus. These men rejected superstition and the notion of mysticism and instead relied on experimental method in attempt to figure out the secrets of the universe. Their ideas and experimental method spread throughout Greece and led to many discoveries. From the time of the first Ionian scientist, Thales, to the last, Democritus, mysticism gained popularity in the ancient world and destroyed the observational and experimental methods they had worked to build. Plato, who believed there were gods in everything, encouraged that all the works of Democritus be burnt and so of the seventy three books that he wrote not one has survived.
I wasn’t going to write about Charlie Sheen but I think he is very relevant to the topic at hand. Although many don’t agree with the reality Sheen created for himself he has , without question, done just that. From social crack smoking to multiple princesses he has chosen values in his life, and according to Sartre “value is nothing more than the meaning you choose.” Other than the fact that his antics are highly entertaining, why are so many people concerned and up in arms about Sheen? Maybe because he has created his own reality and that frightens people. If he wants to have two or three girl friends that are aware of one another and mutually consent to the relationship then why shouldn’t he? If he wants to drink himself to death or socially smoke crack then, as long as he isn’t harming anyone else, shouldn’t he be allowed to do that? Why is it more noble to die of heart failure than cirrhosis of the liver or a crack overdose? Shouldn’t one be allowed to define their own life and in turn their own death?
I think there is a lot of truth to be found in Sheen, like his rant against AA. AA makes baseless normative claims in an attempt to bring others under the umbrella of their doctrine. AA was founded in 1935 by protestants, and didn’t have it’s first non protestant member until 1939, who was a Catholic. It has become a religion itself and uses some of the same scare tactics found in churches. If you stop coming then you are doomed you can’t make it on your own, you need the higher power. Sheen said ” I cured myself with my mind” which, to me, translates as ” I am my own higher power”. If one person can say it takes a lifetime of weekly meetings to control your addiction why can’t another claim they used the power of their mind to cure themselves in an instant? If one is absurd than the other must be as well.
Sheen was paid two million dollars an episode on his show before he was fired because that’s what people said he was worth, both the producers of his television show as well as the viewing audience. How could he explain to himself that he was making two million dollars an episode? He could , as many others do, claim it was the will of a divine power who turned its back on the millions of suffering and starving people in the world to deliver him two million dollars an episode and the American viewing populace a vapid excuse for entertainment or he could give himself the credit. I think he choose the more logical answer. If I were being paid two million dollars a week I’d also “be sick of pretending I am not a totally bitchin’ rock star from mars”.
It shouldn’t take vast sums of money for us to realize we are all “totally bitchin’ rockstars from mars” and to want to help others realize they also have the potential to be “TBRSFM” or totally bitchin’ rock stars from the crab nebula or where ever they choose. I think Sheen, if he doesn’t already, would enjoy the closing quote from Sartre.

But cowards and stinkers can be judged only from a strictly unbiased point of view.”"

We all create our reality according to our beliefs. Our reality looks much different to others who see it with their own experiences and beliefs.
It would be interesting to see ourselves through someone else’s eyes.
A nice piece. The only statement I would argue with is that the holder of divine approved values is “insulated from criticism.” I would prefer that you said that the faithful attempt to insulate themelves from criticism, or any questioning of their faith, through such divine stamps of approval. The Catholic doctrine of the infallibility of the Pope on matters of faith is a great example of this. In the Islamic world, where I find myself living and teaching these days, they believe that the Qu’ran is literally the word of God, and Mohammed was a mere transceiver to God’s transmission from heaven!!
I think another reason that existentialism is hard to define is because exisitentialists to vary in their outlooks. I think therefore I exist–but I don’t know much else and don’t know what follows from that, except the freedom to be what one wants to be. Thus, Albert Camus describes The Stranger–a man who has the freedome to shoot another man for no particular reason at all. So total freedom does have its down side, but is the natural consequence of the failure of the Enlightenment project in philosophy. Nietsche are Nazism are arguably other products of that failure in philosophy which ushered in existentialism. Thanks–I’m going to pick up some Satre.
I believe the new physics (having turned 180 degrees from Galileo’s anti-ego universe) now intimates a new construction. An existential universe in which consciousness interjects meaning and attribution on infinite randomness, but albeit, a particular randomness which happens to form up the very consciousness which is projecting meaning. Sorry, but in the end it is a nihilistic existentialism. But I am happy to be able to take the train ride, look out the windows and marvel, even if my marvelling is deterministic.
